What is a WiFi extender?

A WiFi extender (also called a repeater or booster) is a small device that receives the WiFi signal from your existing router, amplifies it and rebroadcasts it into the parts of your home or office the router cannot reach on its own.

It repeats, it does not create

An extender has no internet connection of its own. It depends entirely on the router — a weak or unstable router signal at the extender's location means a weak extended network too.

It works on two radios

One radio talks to the router (backhaul), the other serves your devices. On single-band units both jobs share the same radio, which is why throughput is roughly halved.

It creates coverage, not speed

An extender fixes dead zones and dropped calls in far rooms. It cannot make your broadband plan faster than the speed your ISP delivers to the router.

What does an extender actually do in your network?

Understanding the job of each part makes troubleshooting far simpler — most complaints are caused by the link between router and extender, not by the extender itself.

  • Receives the router's WiFi and re-transmits it under the same or a slightly different network name (SSID).
  • Bridges wired devices such as smart TVs, consoles and printers through its LAN port in many models.
  • Can run in Access Point mode when connected to the router with an Ethernet cable — the fastest and most stable option.
  • Handles band steering so 2.4 GHz reaches further through walls while 5 GHz carries higher speed over short distances.
  • Keeps a separate admin page where you set security type, channel, SSID and firmware.

Why do problems keep appearing?

  • Extender placed too far from the router, so it repeats an already weak signal.
  • Wrong or mistyped WiFi password — capitalisation and symbols must match exactly.
  • Router set to a hidden SSID, MAC filtering or WPA3-only security the extender cannot join.
  • Two devices handing out IP addresses, creating an address conflict on the network.
  • Outdated firmware causing nightly disconnects and slow reconnection.
  • Interference from microwaves, Bluetooth speakers, cordless phones and neighbouring networks on the same channel.

How WiFi extender setup works

Almost every extender follows the same six stages, whatever the brand printed on the box. Follow them in order and keep the router powered on the whole time.

1. Unbox & power on

Plug the extender into a wall socket near your router and wait until the power LED becomes solid.

2. Connect to setup SSID

On your phone or laptop, join the extender's default network (usually printed on the label).

3. Open the setup page

Visit the extender's web address or default IP and sign in with the default credentials.

4. Select your home WiFi

Scan for networks, pick your router's SSID and enter the WiFi password exactly as it is.

5. Name the extended network

Keep the same SSID for seamless roaming, or add _EXT to keep the two bands separate.

6. Relocate & test

Move the extender halfway between the router and the dead zone, then run a speed test.

Points to keep in mind before you start

Most failed installations come down to placement and password mistakes, not faulty hardware.

  • Place the extender where the router signal is still at least 50% strong — never inside the dead zone itself.
  • Keep it away from microwaves, cordless phones, aquariums, mirrors and thick concrete walls.
  • Note your exact WiFi name and password, including capital letters and symbols.
  • Update the extender firmware once setup is finished to avoid random disconnects.
  • Use a plug socket at waist height or above; floor-level sockets weaken coverage.
  • Change the default admin password before you finish the wizard.

Common issues users report

  • Extender LED stays red or amber after setup
  • Extended network visible but has no internet access
  • Cannot open the extender's setup page or default IP
  • Forgot the extender admin password after a firmware update
  • Speeds drop by more than half on the extended network
  • Devices keep switching between router and extender
